چکیده

The standard ophthalmic examination was obtain, photophundus and fluorescein angiography. Hematological parameters (ESR, WBC, and RBC) and biochemical analysis were done (levels of uric acid, creatinin and urea, plasma fibrinogen level, C reactive protein, glycemia, glycated hemoglobin A1C, total cholesterol, and its fractions, triglycerides). We used National Cholesterol Education Program criteria for metabolic syndrome.

Adiponectin: an adipokine with protective features against metabolic syndrome

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) as a collection of obesity-associated disorders is associated with inflammation, oxidative stress, pro-thrombotic state, elevated risk of developing cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Adiponectin is one of the most abundant peptide hormones derived from adipose tissue. This protein plays a major role in glucose and lipid metabolism and prevents development of ...

Clinical Approaches of Retinal Diseases in Pregnancy

Pregnancy leads to significant changes in the body, which potentially affect the retina. Pregnancy can induce disease such as that seen in hypertensive retinopathy and choroidopathy. It can cause exudative retinal detachments in the HELLP syndrome (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelets), disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), ...

Thermolabile MTHFR genotype and retinal vascular occlusive disease.

BACKGROUND Raised levels of total plasma homocysteine (tHcy) are associated with an increased risk of retinal vascular occlusive disease. A thermolabile form of a pivotal enzyme in homocysteine metabolism, methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR), has been associated with vascular occlusive disease and raised tHcy levels. The relation between thermolabile MTHFR genotype, tHcy, and retinal va...

Effects of Ramadan Fasting on the Regulation of Inflammation

The month of Ramadan, as a model of intermittent fasting, is a valuable opportunity to investigate the effects of dietary modifications on human metabolism. Fasting improves insulin sensitivity, reduces atherogenic risk, oxidative stress, and inflammation. Inflammation plays a key role in the pathogenesis of different disorders including atherosclerosis, metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular di...

Antiphospholipid antibodies: a risk factor for occlusive ocular vascular disease in systemic lupus erythematosus and the 'primary' antiphospholipid syndrome.

Seven cases of occlusive ocular vascular disease affecting retinal and choroidal vessels were found among 84 consecutive patients with raised levels of anticardiolipin antibodies attending the lupus arthritis clinic at St Thomas's Hospital from 1985 to 1987. Six patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and one with a 'primary antiphospholipid syndrome' had occlusive ocular vascular dise...
